On 30th March, 1915, the 1st Irish Guards of 4th (Guards) Brigade, 2nd Division, moved into trenches at Cuinchy, near La Bassée in France. At 3.50am on 1st April, John Stewart was killed by a sniper when he looked over the parapet of the trench at an enemy position known as the Duck’s Bill. |
